PEC Webinar - Taking the Long View: Early Recruitment of Educators

Join two panelists from Educator Preparation Providers (EPP) and one panelist from a State Education Agency (SEA) as they discuss promising practices in recruiting high school and college students to the teaching profession. You will learn about university partnerships with local K-12 districts and community colleges to create diverse pathways and support for teacher candidates. Also, you will hear how an SEA connects with both university and technical college systems in teacher recruitment efforts.

Panelists include:

  • Dr. Brittany Garling, Dean of the School of Education, Buena Vista University in Storm Lake, Iowa, discusses high school students' participation in an educator academy to help start a grow their own program within districts along with a faster track to graduation. She also discusses university partnership programs with community colleges and local K-12 districts creating diverse pathways for our teacher candidates.
  • Dr. Mark McDermott, Associate Dean at the College of Education, University of Iowa, will discuss efforts to engage high school students interested in exploring teaching as a profession through concurrent enrollment courses and young educator clubs, as well as specific work with community college partners to create seamless pathways for pre-service teachers.
  • Dr. Vickie Rundbaken, Specialist for the Teaching as a Profession Program, Georgia Department of Education, discusses several initiatives in Georgia to recruit teachers through multiple pathways tailored to high school and college students. Georgia has established a statewide articulation agreement with the University System of Georgia and Technical College System of Georgia to support recruitment efforts.
